Why we dont use FacebookDue to recent frequent wishes from the public for ReadWriteMusic to join Facebook and many missconceptions about the reasons why we the record label is not on Facebook, we would like to clarify this. Read Write Music is a socially responsible record label and althought at the first sight it might seem that this is contradictory to not joining Facebook, the reality is unfortunately quite different from this notion. Facebook is a company that holds it's value due to intellectual property they monopolize through their user agreement when people join the service. The value of our ideas, our morning wishes and good night thoughts, music playlists and upcoming gig dates is currently being valued at billions. There might not be an alternative social network comparable with Facebook at this time but here at ReadWriteMusic we believe someone has to start saying something about this issue we have with intellectual property laws worldwide which in effect creates even such strong communities as Creative Commons. Current copyright laws enable many companies nowadays not only to abuse creators by making them sign ridiculous contracts, collecting societies which have been auditet under Competition Commission (under Anti-monopoly laws) more than once and major companies that have the investment to license huge amounts of content with paying nearly zero money to independent content owners (Spotify).
'Standing on the shoulders of giants' is what we believe in. Off course we are also looking into possibilities of bypassing the FB user agreement and perhaps in the future you might see us find a way. We try to promote responsibility and since we have the knowledge to make the choice, ReadWriteMusic will not be joining Facebook any time soon unfortunately.
